The Crash Records Section processes all highway
crashes, approximately 45,000 a year, into a large integrated
database. They receive reports from the State Police
who gather them from other law enforcement agencies around
the state. Because this section locates each crash geographically
and combines it with other highway characteristics, the department
is able to identify where high incidences of crashes are occurring.
They look for patterns to determine whether engineering
solutions may be possible.
As part
of the High Crash Location Program (HCL) the Crash Records
Section has been using the Departments document management
program called Tedocs to make the HCL data available to
department personnel electronically. The HCL
data packets consist of a collision diagram, crash summary
I & II, crash reports, and a node map. This data
is scanned into Tedocs and made available through MDOT's
network.
