Traffic Engineering Division

The Maine Department of Transportation Traffic Engineering Division has two major functional sections; Design and Operations.

Design

This section is responsible for signal, lighting, and signing plans; site reviews; and guides our Division Traffic Engineers and Division Sign Crews through its group of engineers and technicians.

  • Official Business Direction Signs  This section handles all the applications for Official Business Directional Signs (ODBS). As well as the removal of all illegal signs.

 

  • Traffic Engineering Design  The Design group draws plans for traffic signals, and interstate signs and lighting. As well as monitoring site development law / traffic permits.

 

Operations

This section is responsible for Crash Records; Traffic Data Collection; Right of Way Control; Sign Shop Operations; and Maintenance of our Electrical Devices and Pavement Markings Program.

  • Crash Records This section  processes all highway crashes, about 45,000 a year, into a large integrated database.
  • Traffic Monitoring This group collects, analyzes, and distributes information about the quantity and type of vehicles traversing Maine's highway system.
  • Pavement Marking/Operations  This section is a very diverse group which consists of the Striping, Stenciling, and the   Interstate Sign crew. 
  • Electrical  This group  maintains all of  DOT's electrical equipment.
