Summary

PLEASE READ! Essential Wildlife Habitats are areas currently or historically providing physical or biological features essential to the conservation of an endangered or threatened species in Maine and which may require special management considerations. As required under the Maine Endangered Species Act, a state agency or municipal government shall not permit, license, fund or carry out projects that will significantly alter an Essential Habitat or violate protection guidelines adopted for the habitat. Landowners, project planners, municipalities or state agencies considering a project in or near an Essential Habitat should immediately contact an MDIFW Regional Wildlife Biologist for assistance. Essential Wildlife Habitat pertains only to definitions under Maine's endangered species laws (12 MRSA, Chapter 713, Subchapter V, Sections 7754 and 7755-A) and regulations (MDIFW Rules, Chapter 8.05). Information about and mapped locations of other endangered and threatened species habitats, "Significant Wildlife Habitat" (38 MRSA, Chapter 3, Subchapter 1, Section 480-B), rare plants and natural communities, or other important natural resources are not included. For comprehensive information about these resources, please contact the following agencies: Fish and Wildlife Information: Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife 284 State Street State House Station 41 Augusta, Maine 04333-0041 Phone: (207) 287-8000 Rare Plant and Natural Community Information: Maine Natural Areas Program Maine Department of Conservation 159 Hospital Street State House Station 93 Augusta, Maine 04333-0093 Phone: (207) 287-8044

Alternate titles  geocode
Publication date 1971-05-13

Presentation formats  digital document
FGDC geospatial presentation format  tabular digital data

Other citation details This citation is for the first official Standard Geographic Code endorsed and adopted by the Governor of Maine, on July 1, 1971. Geocodes have undergone subsequent revisions, all of which were "officially" rolled back to this 1971 list by Maine's Information Services Policy Board (ISPB), as of January 2000. In 1971, all Maine state agencies were requested to implement these five digit geocodes, in agency information systems, to build a base of data for Maine's Minor Civil Divisions (MCDs) and to promote data sharing. Data coded by MCD may subsequently be summarized by any other type of region, administrative district, natural area, etc. The first two digits of the geocode represent the federal code (FIPS) for Maine counties, the remaining three digits uniquely identify each of Maine's MCDs and Reservations. As an information service to state agencies and the public, geocodes for Maine, are now maintained, updated and made available for download, in comma delimited text and .dbf format, through the Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems (MEGIS) Data Catalog at http://megis.maine.gov/catalog/ , "Tables" link.

Available format
Name ESRI Shapefile
Version ARC Version 8.x
Format information content MEGIS will soon make all data in the internet Data Catalog available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. This additional format will first be available for E911 data under the TOWNS tab. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView; you can create your own data using the shapefile format; an existing ARC/INFO coverage can be converted to a shapefile; other spatial data formats can be converted to shapefiles. Three files are created for each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles. CAUTION: When you edit an existing theme or shapefile you are creating a new dataset or at least a new version of a dataset; give the dataset a new name or a version identifier to reflect your edits. Be prepared to fully document your sources and to both quantify and qualify the edits you make in order to facilitate coordination with other data sources. PLEASE NOTE: conversion to shapefile format changes some characters ( # - .) to underscores; item names over 10 characters are truncated. An effort will be made over time to consider these limitations in item names, and to eliminate the use of these characters in Maine GIS data development. It should not be assumed that a conversion from shapefile back to coverage would produce the same data file as found in the original coverage format. The results of such a conversion are greatly improved by the use of PRECISION setting DOUBLE, DOUBLE and careful management of tolerances.

Available format
Name ARCE
Version ARC Version 8.3
Specification ARC/INFO Export Format
File decompression technique PKZIP compatible
Format information content An Arc/Info export file is an interchange format used to transfer spatial data, INFO data files, and other ESRI ARC/INFO files between various machine types. Export files have the suffix .e00 and contain, in fixed-length ASCII format, all spatial information available for each feature. The command IMPORT is available in A/I to convert the export file to original format, i.e. coverage, grid, or other spatial data file. Import will add a spatial data file and a related INFO file to a machine directory. ESRI's ArcView is packaged with an import utility called IMPORT71 for the same export file conversion. The utility is also available through the FREE software link on the MEGIS homepage under "Ordering Data" at http://apollo.ogis.state.me.us/ or from ESRI at http://www.esri.com/. CARE MUST BE TAKEN after import, not to separate the spatial information from its related INFO file. Since export files are in ASCII format make sure any file transfer method like FTP is executed under ASCII mode. Binary transfer will not work correctly.

Overview Description
Entity and Attribute Overview This coverage contains locations for 22 roseate tern nesting areas. Nesting areas identified and mapped as Essential Habitat must have a record of at least one pair of nesting roseate terns since 1930; have suitable habitat as indicated by the presence of nesting common, arctic, or roseate terns in at least any 3 years since 1976; and be considered essential to the achievement of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife management goals and objectives for roseate terns. All boundaries are shown as a solid line and the inside of the line is the edge of the boundary. The boundary line is located approximately 1320 feet from the low tide edge of the nesting island or approximately 1320 feet from the portion of the island used for nesting.

Description
Abstract
EHRTERN Roseate Tern nesting areas identified and mapped as Essential Habitat by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). The dataset is maintained as a REGIONS coverage and contains attributes for site reference, town, acres, and island identification.

Purpose

For comprehensive information about these resources, please contact the following agencies:

Other Citation Details
This citation is for the first official Standard Geographic Code endorsed and adopted by the Governor of Maine, on July 1, 1971.

Overview Description
Entity and Attribute Overview
This coverage contains locations for 22 roseate tern nesting areas.

ARC/INFO Export Format
Format Information Content
An Arc/Info export file is an interchange format used to transfer spatial data, INFO data files, and other ESRI ARC/INFO files between various machine types.

Digital Form
Digital Transfer Information
Format NameESRI Shapefile
Format Version NumberARC Version 8.x
Format Information Content
MEGIS will soon make all data in the internet Data Catalog available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format.
