SEISMIC_LINES contains line data describing the results of 1-channel and 12-channel seismic refraction studies mapped at a scale of 1:24,000, from the Maine Geological Survey. The results include the depth to the water and depth to the bedrock.

Measure description The data were compiled on a 1:24,000 scale base with a horizontal accuracy +/- 40 feet or 12 meters. Seismic line locations were constructed from a point (determined either by plotting position on a USGS topographic map based on odometer measurements and landmarks, or, for more recent data, with GPS), an azimuth, and a seismic line length.

Description Seismic refraction is a surface geophysical technique that uses the travel time of sound waves through various materials to determine the thickness of the layers below the ground surface. The technique can distinguish between unsaturated sand and gravel, saturated sand and gravel, and bedrock, so that in areas of sand and gravel it is possible to determine the depth to the water table and the depth to bedrock, and by difference the saturated thickness of sand and gravel. The information is used in the delineation of areas of significant sand and gravel aquifers.
