2013 Annual MASAR Training Conference Day One

Description of Event:

This year, MASAR’s training conference will be hosted by the Waldo County Search and Rescue Team (WCSAR) at the beautiful Camp Bishopswood facility in Hope, Maine.

Some of our events will include:

  • Jocelyn Stohl, Vermont State Police (ret.), and contributing author of the text Lost Person Behavior, will offer insight into the psychology and behavior of “being lost”.

  • Steve McCausland, Public Information Officer at the Maine Department of Public Safety, will talk about the media’s role in searches, and how to deal effectively with the media.

  • Lt. Kevin Adam, of the Maine Warden Service, will discuss what to expect at searches, how SAR is organized in Maine, and the process of being called out.

  • Tom Seymour, plant and foraging expert, will hold sessions on the flora of Maine, and plants that pose hazards to searchers.
  • Randy McEwen, teacher and columnist for North Woods Sporting Journal, will teach his popular course on navigation.
  • AND… workshops on
    • Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses;
    • Searching for lost persons with autism (counts for 2 CEHs!);
    • How your local Emergency Management Agency can help your SAR group;
    • Distinguishing human bones from animal bones;
    • And more!

We are also looking forward to some visits from the Maine Forest Service and LifeFlight of Maine aircrafts, as well as a host of other presenters and instructors. Additionally, we will have a dinnertime talk by search and rescue guru John Ford, and a fun, “self-guided search” where you can test your powers of observation!

Registration opens on MARCH 15! $45 BEFORE April 27. (Cost for registering AFTER April 27: $100.) Camping sites and some cabins will be available Friday night. Check the Waldo County Search & Rescue team’s website http://waldosar.weebly.com/ for information!
