Training Announcement: Rail Safety for Emergency Responders

A four-hour course, Rail Safety for Emergency Responders, will be held at five Aroostook County Locations July 23, 24 and 25, 2013. The course is presented in cooperation with the US Department of Transportation, the Transportation Security Administration, Operation Lifesaver, New Brunswick Southern Railway, Eastern Maine Railway and Maine Northern Railway.

This course is designed to provide emergency responders critical information to prepare them for responding to a railroad incident, including:

  • safe response;
  • knowledge of railroad electrical, fuel, and air systems;
  • hazardous materials; identifying rolling stock;
  • pinch points;
  • stopping a train;
  • high/low pressure tank cars; and
  • other on-scene dangers.

In addition, the course will cover Locomotive Emergency Response operations, approaching the scene, entering a locomotive, and proper extrication techniques. It also brings a clearer understanding of the difficulties associated with any railroad related response and investigation.

This basic 4 hour course is free and all levels of fire department and emergency response personnel including DEP, EPA, police and other emergency response agencies are encouraged to attend.

The course features instructors from:

  • Region One, Federal Railroad Administration
  • Transportation Security Administration
  • Maine Emergency Management Agency
  • Operation Life Saver, Maine and Canada

July 24, 2013

  • 1800-2200 hrs. Caribou EOC (next to the FD), 121 High St, Caribou

July 25, 2013

  • 1800-2200 hrs. Van Buren FD, 51 Main St, Van Buren
