Preparedness Conference to "Get Real" About New England Disasters

Think Hurricanes and Tornadoes Don't Really Affect New England?

Think again.

"Maine Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference" will feature presentations from two New England emergency managers who dealt with unthinkable disasters in 2011. The Conference will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24th and 25th at the Augusta Civic Center.

Vermont's Response to Tropical Storm Irene

On Tuesday, April 24th, Peter Coffey, Deputy Director, Vermont Emergency Management Agency will address the Conference. Mr. Coffey's presentation will cover the response to Irene from preparedness and response to the recovery which is still ongoing. The presentation begins with preparedness efforts the week before the storm, covers the the devastating damage to the state, and moves to the long-term recovery and mitigation strategies that Vermont has undertaken.

The Great Springfield Tornado of 2011

On Wednesday, April 25th, Robert J. Hassett, Director of the Office of Emergency Preparedness in Springfield, Massachusetts will describe the multiple tornadic events which devastated a major portion of the City of Springfield and cut a 39-mile-long, half-mile wide path from Westfield to Charlton on June 1st, 2011. The presentation covers aspects of the City's response and recovery actions, including Incident Command and Emergency Operations Center activities and lessons learned.

Both presenters bring exceptional experience and perspective to their current emergency management positions.

Mr. Coffey holds a Masters Degree in Education, and came to emergency management when he retired after 31 years as an educator. He served for 2 years as the Emergency Preparedness Chief at the Vermont Department of Health before taking his current position as Deputy Director for Operations and Logistics at Vermont Emergency Management in 2006. He has been a member of the Bristol Fire Department since 1976 and served for 19 years as Assistant Chief.

Mr. Hassett holds a Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Engineering, a Master of Public Health and a Graduate Certificate in Disaster Management. During his military career he served in a wide variety of public health and operational positions. Currently he is the Director of the Springfield Office of Emergency Preparedness, Project Officer for the Springfield Metropolitan Medical Response System and an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Health.
