Challenge for February

by Lester Dickey

The following inscription appears on a gravestone in the churchyard in Denham, Buckinghamshire, England. Find the error.

For a greater challenge, assume that Edward was three years older than Sarah. What single digit would need to be changed in the inscription to make everything correct?

Sacred to the memory of
Mr. EDWARD FOUNTAIN
Of This Parish, Who Died
On the 28th Oct. 1823:
AGED 66 YEARS
Also of
MRS. SARAH FOUNTAIN
HIS WIDOW, WHO DIED
ON THE
23rd SEPTEMBER 1812
AGED 82 YEARS

Please e-mail Lester Dickey with your answer and your name, phone number, and the organization for which you work. Or call Barbara Buck at 624-9501. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries and will receive a FREE pizza, either from CJ’s Pizza or from the EDOC Cafeteria. All answers must be in no later than the 14th of the month.

Last month's challenge brought 54 answers, with 53 correct. The winner, chosen by random drawing, is Pat Dostie of the Division of Health Engineering.

The answer to the January Challenge is: The next year divisible by both 7 and 13 will be 2093. The last year this happened was 1911. Whether 1911 was "lucky" or "unlucky" will be left to you. Many of you sent list of events in 1911 - the most common being the tragic fire in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City on March 25 in which 146 women lost their lives. Certainly it was a bad year for them and their families.
