Get and Stay Secure

By Mike Pomerleau

You are invited to attend Microsoft's Security presentation that the Bureau of Information Services has arranged on Thursday February 7, 2002. The first session will be at the Technical Coordinators meeting from 9 to 10 AM in Room 107, of the Cross Office Building in Augusta. The second session will be held from 1:30 to 3 PM in Public Utilities Commission (PUC) hearing room at 242 State Street in Augusta.

We are fortunate to have Barbara Chung from Microsoft's Redmond headquarters here February 7 to discuss their Get and Stay Secure initiative along with the new Windows Update Corporate Edition Software Programs, which they will be providing to the State of Maine. Windows Update Corporate Edition will allow State information technology administrators to perform semi-automatic or automatic update of Windows computers for security, program, and operating system fixes from a local State Update Server, instead of requiring each computer to go to Microsoft's Update Web site over the Internet.

The Strategic Technology Protection Program (STPP) is a two-phase program that represents an unprecedented mobilization of Microsoft's people and resources to integrate product, services, and support. The first phase, Get Secure is composed of new tools to help evaluate the patch status of customers’ networks, then bring them to a secure state. Phase Two, Stay Secure is composed of a number of initiatives including free virus-related support, security-related service offerings, and a number of new tools to assist in maintaining the patch level of enterprise networks. See http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.asp for details.
