Challenge for August

by Lester Dickey

Many of you complained that the July "Challenge" was too easy. This month I’ve selected a couple of problems that are very different from each other and are a little more difficult than last month’s. You can choose which you want to use as your entry. You can do both, but only the one you specify "counts" for the drawing. If you do not specify, I will use the answer to the first question as your entry.

    1. Kelly bought a used car which has 4 new tires on it. To sweeten the deal, the seller has thrown in two additional new tires. Kelly drives the car, rotating the six tires equally, for 75,000 miles, at which time all six tires are worn out. How many miles on each tire?
    2. When a particular positive whole number, written in digits, is turned upside down, it increases in value by 21. What is the number?

Please e-mail Lester Dickey with your answer and your name, phone number, and the organization for which you work. Or call Barbara Buck at 624-9501. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries and will receive a FREE pizza, either from CJ’s Pizza or from the EDOC Cafeteria. All answers must be in no later than the 14th of the month.

Last month's challenge brought 78 answers, with 71 correct. The winner, chosen by random drawing, is Clara Alvarez of Maine Revenue Services.

The answer to the July Challenge is: The answer to the first question is "Thursday." The answer to the second one is 35/36. Read left to right, interpret "and" to be + (add) and "of" to be X (multiply), then do the addition first, before the multiplication. So, it is (1/3 + ½) X 1/3 X (3 + ½).
