While it is true that ProjExGIS will make data entry more efficient, those of us involved in planning capital improvement projects also have reasons to welcome the successful rollout of this application. ProjExGIS makes it possible to quickly and accurately associate GIS data with every project, thereby making it possible to accurately map them.
ProjExGIS will give all of MaineDOT planners, regardless of their area of responsibility, the capability to map all of the projects that we plan to program in the next six years. This ability will assist us in prioritizing future work as well as allowing us a more efficient means to identify work planned in the same geographic area by multiple planners. For example, Pavement Management may plan to repave a highway in the same community where Safety Management plans to improve a hazardous intersection.
When MaineDOT combines multiple projects in the same geographic area into one contract, the taxpayers benefit from cost savings. The savings occur because the contractor will mobilize forces only once to address multiple deficiencies in the transportation system. Communities will also benefit from less disruption in traffic flow because the work will be coordinated by a single entity responsible for successful completion of all of the work identified in the project scope.
Thanks to all who worked on this project which "put our work on the map"!
