Challenge for December

by Lester Dickey

The "Engineering News-Record" printed, in 1981, a colorful drawing of a pencil on its front cover. This drawing is reproduced below. As they soon realized, there are several errors in the picture. Your job is to find 3 of the 4 major errors. For extra credit, but no more pizza, find all 4. As an additional challenge, there is a fifth questionable (maybe wrong, maybe not) part of the drawing. Think about pencil sharpeners for this additional challenge. Assume you are looking at a typical #2 pencil, straight on from the side.

Please e-mail Lester Dickey with your answer and your name, phone number, and the organization for which you work. Or call Barbara Buck at 624-9501. The winner will be drawn from all the correct entries and will receive a FREE pizza, either from CJ’s Pizza or from the EDOC Cafeteria. All answers must be in no later than the 14th of the month.

Last month's challenge brought 40 answers, with 27 of them being correct. The winner, chosen by random drawing, is Amanda Hilton of the Skowhegan Career Center.

The answer to the November Challenge is: Sonya will need 285 (81+64+49+36+25+16+9+4+1) cans, so she will need to open 12 cartons and will have 3 cans left over.
