Information Technology Security Policies Under Review

By Don Hildebrand

The Information Services Policy Board (ISPB)/Information Services Managers Group (ISMG) Security Team is chartered to review the State’s current information technology security policies and recommend a State Information Technology Security Policy to the ISPB. Membership of this team includes:

Ellen Lee (Team Chair) - Bureau of Information Services

Warren "Putt" Armstrong - Judicial Branch

Scott Clark - Legislative Branch

Donna Grant - Department of Environmental Protection

Don Hildebrand - Office of the CIO

Harry Lanphear - Chief Information Officer

Greg McNeal - Department of Transportation

Dave Pearson - Department of Human Services

Emile Poulin - Department of Public Safety

Bob Witham - Bureau of Information Services

The team reviewed existing security policies used by the State, or required by the Federal government, and adopted the ISO Standard 17799 (IT Code of Practice for Information Security Management) as the framework for a State of Maine IT Security Policy. In addition, the team reviewed practices employed by other states to ensure adequate security of state government data and information systems.

A draft of a revised State of Maine IT Security Policy is currently under review by the Security Team. This draft has been forwarded to the ISMG for review/comment so their specific comments can be incorporated into the current process. A final draft of the policy will be reviewed by the ISPB Privacy and Security Subcommittee before presentation to the ISPB during October. If you would like a copy of this draft, please contact your ISMG member representative (http://inet.state.me.us/ismg/ismglst.htm) or the author by e-mailing don.hildebrand@state.me.us.
