Maine Consumer Guide to Health Insurers

This page provides links to useful health insurance information available on the Bureau of Insurance website. If you have difficulty locating specific information or have questions, you can always contact the Bureau.

Select from the links below to view data related to each health insurance topic. You can find the following Maine specific information:

  • Insurer Complaint Information: This page will provide you with complaint index information for health, disability, and long-term care carriers. A complaint index is a measure of an insurer’s complaints compared to their premiums, which allows you to see how a company compares to the average.
  • Independent External Review Summary: This page will show you the number of independent external reviews conducted during the stated year. An external review is an independent review of a health claim denial by an appropriate medical professional. It is an additional step in the appeals process after an insurance company denies paying your health insurance claim, and the review is conducted by an independent review organization contracted by the Bureau of Insurance.

  • Financial Results Reported Annually: This page provides you with financial information on health insurers in Maine including the number of people covered under their plans, premiums, claim payments, and annual expenses.

  • Health Insurer Market Snapshots: The market snapshots provide the number of covered lives, market share, and rate increase information for both the individual and small group markets.

Other Useful Consumer Information

Our Mission

The Bureau of Insurance, within the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, regulates the insurance industry for solvency and consumer protection. It does so through its examining and licensing procedures of insurance companies, by licensing producers, by reviewing rates and coverage forms, conducting audits, and by sponsoring programs that enhance awareness of and compliance with State laws. The Bureau has statutory authority to enforce the State's laws and rules pertaining to insurance, and it initiates investigations and holds hearings concerning possible infractions of them.
