Limited Deaf Interpreter/Transliterator of American Sign Language and English

"Limited Deaf Interpreter" means a person licensed by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation whose sense of hearing is nonfunctional for the purpose of communication, whose primary means of communication is visual or tactile, and who provides intermediary interpreting.

  • License Fee $100.
  • Application Fee $50.
  • Payment of a $21 Fee for a State Police criminal background (SBI) check.
  • Make check payable to "Maine State Treasurer."

Requirements
  • Check or Credit Card Authorization.
  • Completed Application.
  • Copy Of High School Diploma Or Equivalent.
  • Sworn, Signed Notarized Code of Ethics (ATTACHMENT "A").
  • A Disclosure Statement - Be sure to print and mail it along with the completed application.

IN ADDITION -- EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING (I or II):

I. Submission of a letter attesting that the applicant's skill level in American Sign Language is equivalent to that of a person who has completed 100 clock hours of instruction in American Sign Language, prepared and signed by:

  • An Instructor recognized by the ASL Teachers' Association or comparable organization; or
  • An Interpreter certified by either the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) or the National Association of the Deaf, Inc. (NAD); or
  • An Instructor of courses conducted through an accredited college, accredited university or accredited/approved high school, or conducted by certification maintenance course sponsors approved by RID, NAD, or a comparable organization.

    AND --

    Proof of completion of at least 100 clock hours of education and training in the interpreting process. Clock hours completed in an adult education program will be recognized only if the instructor was certified by RID or NAD with a minimum certification level of 4, or if the program is recognized by RID’s Certification Maintenance Program for Continuing Education Units, RID’s Associate’s Continuing Education Tracking Program forACET Credits, Northeastern University’s Interpreter Education Project, or the Conference of Interpreter Trainers. Credit will not be given for interpreting process clock hours that were completed prior to 5 years before the date of application.

II. Documentation of a score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment.

Renewal fees and information

Terms

Requirements
  • Check or Credit Card Authorization.
  • Completed Application.
  • Response to the criminal conviction question (indicating "Yes" or "No") and submission of documentation that lists any date(s) and crime(s), along with a copy of the court judgment(s). If your answer is "Yes," then you may not file your renewal application electronically. You must mail the completed renewal application and the necessary fees, along with a copy of the court judgment. You must also submit a letter listing the date of the conviction, the crime committed, and explaining the circumstances surrounding the conviction.
  • 20 clock hours of annual continuing education in American Sign Language or the interpreting process, for renewal on 6/30/06 and thereafter.
  • A late fee of $50. is assessed for licenses for which renewal applications were received within 90 days following their expiration date.
  • A person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the registration expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with original registration application, documentation and fees.
