Photographic and Map Resources

The George French Collection of approximately 20,000 photographs is now indexed for over 6,000 images. Primarily scenic, they may be searched by town or topic through a computerized database in our Research Room. Mr. French was a well-known photographer who worked for the State taking promotional photos of Maine during the 1930's through 1950's. Both his public and personal collection is held by the Archives.

The Archives holds a collection of several hundred Civil War officers' photos.

As we work through the 93 million records in the Archives, we identify and record each map found among them. Dating from the 1700's, some show the New England region, the state, parts of the state, towns, parts of towns, individual parcels, and cemeteries. The 6,000+ maps may be searched by town, surveyor, and range of years.

Search Facilities

Both collections have been placed on databases for search by keywords and words in the descriptions of the images. They may be searched on PC's in our Research Room. Searches produce lists of images with reference information. They do not display the images themselves.
