Pegmatite is a course grained granite in which many of Maine’s unique and highly sought after gems and minerals are found. From Granitic Pegmatite quartz, feldspar, and mica have been commercially mined in the state. Pegmatite is an “intrusive rock” which means that it is formed when magma penetrates existing rock and solidifies. The crystallization and solidification processes are what creates the large crystals that pegmatite is known for. Maine has several world class locations for mineral and gem hunting thanks to our large composition of Granitic Pegmatite.
