NOTE: An important change in the training provider for the Maine Suicide Prevention Program (MSPP) took place on July 1.

As of June 30, Medical Care Development (MCD) will no longer longer provide MSPP training programs.

Beginning July 1, the MSPP training program will be housed at the National Alliance on Mental Illness Maine Office (NAMI Maine) in Augusta. Carrie Horne is the MSPP Training Director. To organize and provide MSPP training programs that reach multiple audiences statewide, NAMI will work in partnership with the Co-Occurring Collaborative Serving Maine (CCSME) and the Maine Primary Care Association (MPCA).

CCSME will be involved in developing, marketing and registering participants for MSPP training programs. They will also link behavioral health providers across the state to suicide prevention training. More detailed information on registering for MSPP training will be provided later this summer.

MPCA will link primary care professionals, including clinicians in school based health centers and Indian Health Services, to suicide prevention training.

This collaboration provides an experienced team and exceptional statewide MSPP training programs and services. The training schedule and registration information is forthcoming.

The annual Beyond the Basics conference is April 6, 2012 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Suicide is preventable. Early detection and appropriate treatment and supports are necessary ingredients to effective suicide prevention. The Maine Suicide Prevention Program in the Maine CDC, DHHS, with our partners, is committed to excellence in suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. By raising awareness, knowledge and intervention skills, Maine can realize lower suicide rates.

Training is the cornerstone of the Maine Suicide Prevention Program (MSPP). The MSPP offers a variety of training and education programs that provide a face-to-face learning opportunity to dispel myths, address misconceptions, and increase knowledge and practice intervention skills to prevent suicide. Because suicide can happen in any age group, in any community, in families of any income or educational level, everyone has a role to play in learning about preventing suicide.

Continuing education in effective suicide prevention strategies is essential for those professionals in direct contact with individuals who may be at risk. Training facilitates the early identification, effective support and appropriate treatment of persons at risk. Suicide prevention is most effective when direct service staff are trained and suicide prevention knowledge is integrated into organizations and agencies providing services. Addressing suicide prevention in our community serving agencies is vital to the health and welfare of all persons living in Maine.
