Goals: To serve as an important public asset that brings awareness and appreciation for Maine’s unique marine resources through education and science.
Current Programs:
Programs include a variety of hands-on subject classes as part of a Summer Science Festival during July & August; Laboratory tours through facility to educate visitors about the history, functions, and current research of the agency; daily interactive presentations on the biology and fishing industry of lobsters, the sharks and skate species, and the touch tanks; Sportfishing clinics for interested participants to try their hand at angler fishing from our dock using loaned gear; Teacher recertification courses located at our newly completed Burnt Island Education Center in conjunction with the University of Maine and the development of curriculum materials for teachers to utilize in the subject areas of marine science and oceanography.
