Goals: To educate the public about marine life and commercial fishing in the Gulf of Maine.
Current Programs:
Lobster Hatchery facility: lobsters are raised to the early benthic stage for release in local waters. Thomas Bay Oceanarium facility: thirteen acres of salt marsh with a guided tour of the marsh; Maine Lobster Museum; hands-on programs for schools; summer college intern program; consulting and developing programs on safety at sea; underutilized species. Southwest Harbor facility: interpretive programs on marine life; exhibits on tides, seawater, hypothermia, and commercial fishing methods.
Resources: Guided tours are available at the Bar Harbor/Thomas Bay facility; discounts for schools and other groups (reservations required which can be booked during winter months for spring trips); hands-on programs for schools during winter months.
