Goals: The mission of Ferry Beach Ecology School is to foster stewardship for the Earth by educating youth and adults in the science ecology and the practice of sustainability.
Current Programs:
FBES offers residential science programs at its Saco Bay campus (for elementary through high school students). In the field, lessons focus on ecology, astronomy, climate and geology, ocean dunes and beaches, night hike, forest, tide pools, coastal watersheds and sustainability. Since 1998, FBES has brought quality ecology education programs to more than 46,000 children and adults throughout New England through its residential overnight programs at its coastal campus in Saco as well as outreach assemblies, schoolyard ecology programs, family events and educator/teacher workshops.
Ferry Beach is located on southern Saco Bay and its facilities can accommodate 180 students per week for spring and fall term programs. Participating schools receive the FBES Manual for Classroom Teachers and the FBES Teaching Guide. The FBES web site includes sections for students and teachers, information on the Ferry Beach site and programs, plus links to other helpful marine science and ecology web sites. FBES has published and sells both The Ferry Beach Guide: An Ecological Tour of New England’s Coastal Ecosystems and The ABCs of Ecology®: An Educator’s Guide to Learning Outside.
