Goals: Maine Maritime Academy is a college specializing in ocean- and marine-oriented programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, with emphasis on engineering, transportation, management, and ocean sciences, as well as preparing officers for the U.S. Merchant Marine and uniformed services of the United States. The college provides public service to the state while perpetuating Maine's heritage of the sea.
Current Programs:
The college offers summer programs for high school students in marine science and traditional sail techniques and contemporary seamanship. Programs are offered through MMA's division of continuing education. Discovery Voyage, a program offered to Maine high schools by MMA, seeks to inspire students to pursue college careers. The program encourages students to apply math and science skills, and allows students the opportunity to tour the campus, operate equipment, and talk with students and faculty. Programs are coordinated by the college's High School Relations Office. The college conducts research on Penobscot Bay and the Gulf of Maine and offers research charter services to public and private groups.
