Goals: The Maine Sea Grant Program is a statewide effort in marine research, education, and extension program activities that focus on coastal and marine issues and opportunities related to the Gulf of Maine. The Program promotes using marine science research and education for the development, management, and stewardship of marine and coastal resources.
Current Programs:
Sea Grant supports approximately ten funded research projects annually, a similar number of development (seed fund) projects, and many extension projects carried out by the Marine Extension Team, a collaboration of Sea Grant and Cooperative Extension. Projects focus on the management and sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture, as well as ecosystem health issues. Detailed descriptions of projects and contact information can be found on the program web site at www.seagrant.umaine.edu. The Communications office disseminates scientific and technical information from Sea Grant research and outreach activities, and produces materials of general interest on marine and coastal environmental topics.
Research - Maine Sea Grant runs a biennial competition for research projects, with a request for proposals released in January. Requests for development funding to support small-scale or preliminary research projects may be made at any time. Details and application forms are available on the program web site.
Extension - Staff members are available as speakers, meeting facilitators, and workshop conveners; and provide information on fisheries, aquaculture, coastal communities, and ecosystem health topics.
Education - Marine science teacher institutes, internships, for graduates and undergraduates and graduate student fellowships are available.
Communications - Booklets, reports, training manuals, guidebooks, and other informational materials are available through the communications office. For a catalog of current publications, visit the program web site.
