Goals: To serve the educational and cultural needs of the people in Downeast Maine.
Current Programs:
UMM has a new marine field station on Great Wass Island in the town of Beals. The marine station is operated by the non-profit Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research & Education. Outreach and collaborative research efforts with fishermen and harvesters involving shellfish (soft-shell clams, hard clams, scallops, and lobsters) are ongoing.
Resources: Geographic proximity to most types of marine ecosystems that occur in Maine.
