Goals: To assist in the development of economically viable aquaculture opportunities along the coast of Maine and at appropriate inland sites by: 1) sponsoring and facilitating innovative research and development projects involving food, pharmaceuticals and other products from sustainable aquatic systems; 2) investing in the enhancement of aquaculture capacity in Maine; 3) serving as a clearinghouse of educational information to enhance public visibility and acceptance of aquaculture; and 4) encouraging strategic alliances tasked with promoting research, technology transfer, and the commercialization of aquaculture research.
Current Programs:
MAIC oversees a portfolio of over 35 projects. Projects focus on removing obstacles to aquaculture industry growth and assisting startup companies. The Center is also host of the Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition which is held every two years and is planned for Portland, Maine in December 2008.
At least once a year, MAIC issues a "request for proposals." The total amount available under each funding round is approximately $100,000. In addition, the Center seeks to identify promising new aquaculture businesses, which it assists in business planning. Funds programmed by the Center originate with the Maine Legislature, the Maine Department of Marine Resources, and the Federal government.
