Goals: To protect and improve the environment by directing growth and development.
Current Programs:
DEP administers laws affecting coastal wetlands, sand dunes, overboard discharges of treated wastewater, oil pollution, and site location approval of major developments. Research is currently being done into toxic contamination in sediments and tissues as well as other issues of coastal waters.
Resources: A directory entitled Environmental Resources of Maine; citizen's guides to protecting lakes, coastal wetlands, managing private sewage disposal, surveying watersheds, stewardship activities and monitoring information.
