Goals: Maine People's Alliance's mission is to unite Maine's unrepresented citizens in their communities so that together they can identify common concerns and develop the skills and resources necessary to represent themselves in all decision-making forums.
Current Programs:
MPA is currently involved with stopping and cleaning up dioxin and mercury contamination in rivers. The purpose of our Penobscot Valley Toxics Action Project is to hold governmental agencies and polluters accountable for their failure to take action to protect the Penobscot River; educate Penobscot Valley residents about the dangers of mercury and other persistent toxic chemicals present in the Penobscot River; encourage people to become more active participants in the decisions affecting the cleanup of the river; achieve environmental justice for the many low-income and Native American people prevented from using the river; and, in the long-term, eliminate the environmental and public health risks posed by toxic chemicals in the Penobscot River, Penobscot Bay and Maine's midcoast.
Resources: MPA publishes the Alliance newspaper 3-4 times a year.
