Goals: To help students become more aware of environmental issues; to work with soil scientists, biologists, foresters, and other professionals; to find solutions to real problems; to work cooperatively; and to actively participate as citizens in decision-making processes. MACD’s goal is to educate today’s youth to be tomorrow’s environmental leaders!
Current Programs:
ENVIROTHON is a natural resource problem-solving competition for high school students. In an outdoors setting, students are tested in five natural resource areas: soils, wildlife, forestry, aquatics, and a current issue. Resource information is mailed to schools in the fall so that the teams can prepare for the regional and state competitions held in May. The top Maine team qualifies for the national finals. Grades 9 to 12 are eligible in teams of five, an alternate and an adult advisor. The team can be as small as three students.
