Browntail moth winter web identification and clipping training session - Bangor

Bureau / Program: Maine Forest Service
Date: February 20, 2024
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: Bangor Public Works building at 530 Maine Ave, Bangor, ME
Event Type: Browntail Moth, Workshop/Training

The City of Bangor Public Works Forestry Division will be conducting an educational event to help residents and businesses in Bangor recognize and remove browntail moth (BTM) nests. One of the least environmentally impactful ways to mitigate a BTM infestation in the spring is to remove the winter nests while the caterpillars are dormant. Each nest removed in the winter months eliminates up to 400 BTM caterpillars in the spring. These caterpillars present a health risk for residents due to the toxic hairs they shed while growing. Come learn about the risks, how to identify the nests, and how you may be able to mitigate that risk on your own property. Attendees will have an opportunity to watch a demonstration, then use the pole pruner themselves.

Participants should wear weather appropriate clothing. Attendees are encouraged to bring pole pruners, work gloves, and safety glasses, if they have them. If not, pruners, shared glasses, and shared gloves will be provided. Residents are welcome to bring their own pruners. The risk of exposure to toxic BTM hairs is minimal, but out of an abundance of caution, highly sensitive individuals may choose not to attend the event. Event is open to residents and businesses of the City of Bangor, no pre-registration required.

Time:
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM (inclement weather date, Feb 22, 2024). If weather is bad, cancellation announcement will be on City of Bangor Facebook page and WABI cancellations page.
