Aroostook County foliage starting to show its colors

AUGUSTA, Maine - September 15, 2004

The first 2004 fall foliage report from Maine's Department of Conservation (DOC) notes little color change in the state's tree canopy, but holds optimism for a good start to the vibrant transformation of leaves from north to south.

Department of Conservation park and forest rangers are reporting very low or less than 10 percent color change and leaf drop in all seven foliage tracking zones. Details from central Aroostook County indicate ideal weather conditions for leaf color change.

"We've had a recent stretch of sunny days and evening temperatures near 30 degrees," said Forest Ranger Mark Berube located in Portage. "That combination speeds up the production of the colorful leaf pigments that are hidden during the summer."

During the coming weeks, the 50-plus species of trees that make up Maine's 17.5 million acres of forestland will show their yellow, orange, red and purple hues throughout the state. To provide the most accurate foliage information, DOC rangers will report foliage conditions statewide every Wednesday through Oct. 13.

All foliage reports are available on Maine's official fall foliage Web site, www.mainefoliage.com. The site is a great place to start planning for a fall foliage trip, learn more about Maine's trees and their color transformation, or interact with other foliage fanatics.
