Description

Access Notice: Public access to Attean Pond or the Moose River Bow Trip is available in the Town of Jackman or on Holeb Pond. Please note that Attean Landing is accessed via a privately owned and privately maintained road that is periodically closed and gated for repairs or flooding. As the private road runs through private property, the landowners are understandably concerned about misuse of/damage to their road and property. Please be aware that the "turn around" immediately before the gate (approximately 1.5 miles from Rt 201) and the surrounding fields are also private property.

Parking at the boat launch in Jackman is limited and if full, boaters should make plans to move their vehicles elsewhere in town. Access to Holeb Pond is via 12 miles of a maintained, private logging road before accessing the State road where you may encounter variable road conditions. You may also encounter logging trucks and should take appropriate safety precautions.

The Bureau of Parks and Lands is collaborating with the landowners to develop a long

term solution for managing public access to Attean Pond.

Stay Informed:

Holeb's popular three-day canoe trip carries visitors through the heart of this 20,000 acre public reserved unit in western Maine. Several class I and II rapids can be either run or portaged, and a spectacular waterfall highlights the trip in this remote area. Moose and loons accentuate the special character found at Holeb, as wildlife watchers are kept busy viewing the more than 200 species found here.

Visitors enjoy traditional recreational activities such as camping, hiking, fishing and hunting. A conservation easement held by The Forest Society of Maine protects some of the shore of Attean Pond and the Moose River. The day-use areas around Attean Pond are primarily accessible by boat and offer picnic facilities.

Special Considerations

Moving firewood can transport exotic insects & diseases that pose a serious threat to our forests. Don't transport firewood, buy it from a local source. Buy It Where You Burn It

The picnic area is a pavilion on a small island in Attean Pond and is accessible only by boat. Picnicking is allowed at any unoccupied campsite.

The Holeb Pond boat launch off the Turner Beach (or Brook) Road and the Attean launch are often flooded in the spring.
