Committee advances Malon bill to rename bridge after former Biddeford mayor

AUGUSTA – The Legislature’s Transportation Committee voted unanimously on Thursday in favor of a measure sponsored by Rep.

Rep. Malon

Marc Malon, D-Biddeford, to rename the bridge on Main Street between Saco and Biddeford the General Wallace H. Nutting Memorial Bridge.

The measure would name the structure after Gen. Nutting, who was the former mayor of Biddeford and a marked figure of the city’s downtown renaissance. Recently, the bridge was the central site for an event called “Bridging our Past; Uniting our Future,” which sought to acknowledge the city’s history and honor the progress and advancements of the community.

“When I think about the future of Biddeford and Saco, naming this bridge after General Nutting, a leader who bridged our communities himself, is a great symbolic step forward,” said Malon. “His tenure was well-regarded for the professional execution of his duties and for helping to sow the seeds of what would become Biddeford’s downtown renaissance.”

The measure received support from the entire Saco-Biddeford legislative delegation as well as local officials, including the current mayors of both cities. During the bills public hearing, Malon provided committee members with two joint resolutions from the city councils of Biddeford and Saco, respectively, supporting the name change.

The bill will face further votes in the House and Senate in the coming weeks.

Rep. Malon is serving his second term in Maine’s House of Representatives. He serves on the Housing and Economic Development Committee as well as the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.
