Governor signs Pierce bill to implement online voter registration

AUGUSTA - A measure by Rep. Teresa S. Pierce, D-Falmouth, that will allow eligible Mainers to register to vote using a secure online portal is now law.

"So many members of our communities will benefit from this, from aging Mainers to working parents to service members. To strengthen our democracy, we need to look at ways to improve voting access, not limit it," said Pierce. "Maine has long been a leader in voting and elections policy. I am grateful to my colleagues in the Legislature and to the governor for signing this measure to modernize our voter registration system while prioritizing accessibility and security".

Gov. Janet Mills signed LD 1126 into law July 9. The measure will be implemented by the Department of the Secretary of State, which oversees elections in Maine, and takes effect in November 2023.

Pierce is serving her fourth term in the Maine House, representing House District 44, part of Falmouth. She is House chair of the budget-writing Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.
