AUGUSTA – Last Wednesday, Rep. Kelly Murphy, D-Scarborough, introduced a measure before the Joint Standing Committee on Taxation to exempt diapers from the Maine sales tax.

Rep. Murphy introduced this measure initially in the 131st Legislature. It passed both the House and the Senate but did not secure the necessary funding needed to implement it. The bill would help to alleviate the financial strain felt by families across the state who are struggling to balance their budgets. It is projected to provide Mainers who purchase diapers a savings of up to $65 to $100 per year, depending on age and brand.
Diapers are a necessity worn by both Maine’s oldest and youngest demographics. They are essential to maintaining personal health and preventing the spread of infection, such as skin conditions and urinary tract infections.
“Too many of Maine’s working families are struggling right now to afford even the most basic of necessities, like diapers for children and incontinence products used by older people,” said Murphy. “Eliminating this sales tax will lower costs for Maine families, making their lives easier and saving folks from having to choose between purchasing essential items and paying their bills.”
The bill will be scheduled for a work session in the coming weeks.
Murphy, who serves as House chair of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, is serving her second term in the Maine Legislature. She represents District 125, which includes part of Scarborough.
