Located in Searsport on beautiful Penobscot Bay, Carver Memorial is a vibrant small library with a long history of excellence and community support. We are seeking a candidate with an MLS or an equivalent combination of education and experience who is motivated, organized and excited to see the Library through a period of explosive growth. Experience in library operations, strong administrative and customer service skills required. Project or institutional growth management experience is a plus!

Salary range $64,000 - 88,000, depending on qualifications. This is a contract position with the Town of Searsport, an Equal Opportunity Employer.

TOWN OF SEARSPORT JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Library Director
Classification: Permanent Full Time, Department Head
Supervisor: Town Manager
Direction: The Carver Memorial Library Board of Trustees provides direction regarding library operations.

Position requirements:

  • Graduation from a college or university with a Master's Degree in library science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable experience in the operation of a library including administration, collection development, technology management, and the development of programs and activities. Experience and training:
  • Computer proficiency for record keeping, communication, and internet use. Knowledge of standard computer programs such as Windows, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of standard cataloging and classification practice, including AACR2, DDC, MARC, LCSH and RDA.
  • Experience in all aspects of the budgeting process including preparation, implementation, and record maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain collaborative working relationships with other town employees, the Board of Trustees, volunteers, community organizations and the general public. Scope of position:
  • Trains and supervises staff and volunteers, providing work assignments and evaluating performance.
  • Creates library programs, events and activities that provide library services to all age levels and segments of the population and promotes the library as a positive community resource.
  • Provides reference services and readers' advisory. Instructs the public in the use of print and electronic media.
  • Maintains public access to computers and the internet, including appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Designs and implements operating procedures for the circulation of library materials, including computerized check-out, patron enrollment, and interlibrary loan.
  • Develops the library's collection of materials including books, periodicals, and audiovisual items. Evaluates materials using standard professional reviewing tools and allocates funds to meet collection development goals.
  • Provides cataloging and classification of library materials in accordance with contemporary bibliographic standards and practice.
  • Designs, implements, and periodically evaluates the library's computer systems to support operations and public access computing.
  • Monitors the maintenance of the library building and grounds to ensure clean and safe conditions. Evaluates supply and equipment needs and makes purchases as needed within budgetary constraints.
  • Proposes an annual budget to the Town. Maintains accurate financial records and manages town funds appropriately.
  • Works with the Library Board of Trustees in conjunction with the treasurer to develop the annual association budget.
  • Monitors and evaluates grant opportunities and submits funding proposals as appropriate. Works with the Board of Trustees and others to plan and conduct fundraising events.
  • Compiles and uses statistics for management and assessment. Prepares reports detailing library activity and issues, including regular reports to the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Trustees, an annual report to the Town,and reports to the Maine State Library.
  • Develops and recommends library policies for approval by the Board of Trustees. Implements and periodically reviews policies adopted by the Board.
  • Conducts a continuing planning process to identify and address community and library needs and provide direction for library development.
  • Conducts community relations activities, including outreach services and collaboration with other agencies.
  • Prepares public relations and informational materials relating to library events and services, such as press releases, posters, newsletters, and brochures.
  • Maintains and updates, in a timely manner, the library's website and social media presence.
