Organizational Structure of the Maine Marine Patrol

The Bureau of Marine Patrol is one of five bureaus within the Maine Department of Marine Resources.

The Bureau of Marine Patrol is headquartered at DMR’s main office in Augusta. The Marine Patrol Colonel (Chief), Major (Deputy Chief), Captain of Special Services, and Pilot are based at the main office.

The Bureau is divided into two regional divisions each with a Lieutenant and support staff assigned to division offices in Boothbay Harbor and Lamoine.

Each division within the Bureau is further divided into three sections each with a field Sergeant supervising five Officer positions and one boat Specialist per section.

The Maine Marine Patrol, when fully staffed, employs 49 uniformed state law enforcement officers. The entire Department of Marine Resources employs approximately 160 personnel. The staff of the Maine Department of Marine Resources has experienced a rich heritage and to this day continues its proud tradition of serving the citizens of the State of Maine.

Marine Patrol's organizational structure is as follows:

Colonel - Responsible for oversight, management, and planning of all the Bureau’s administrative, law enforcement, and search/rescue response duties.

 

Major - Responsible for operational field command, as well as planning, coordinating, assigning, and overseeing Marine Patrol enforcement activities.

 

Captain - Responsible for oversight of Marine Patrol’s Special Services Division, including the watercraft, vehicle, and aircraft fleets, training, specialty teams, and technology including computers, radios, navigation software, and databases.

 

Lieutenants - Responsible for managing, planning, directing, supervising and evaluating all Marine Patrol law enforcement and search/rescue activities of Sergeants, Officers and Specialists within the Division.

 

Sergeant - Responsible for supervision of all boat Specialists and Marine Patrol Officers, as well as field oversight of all operations, investigations, and search/rescue efforts within the section.

 

Marine Patrol Specialists - Assigned to and responsible for operation of a section's large patrol vessel during routine law enforcement patrols, search operations, and investigative work.

 

Marine Patrol Officers - Assigned to and responsible for a geographic patrol area. Conducts enforcement patrols, inspections, investigations, and protective services work related to marine resources, boating safety, and criminal laws and regulations. Conducts search and rescue on tidal waters.
