LICENSED SOCIAL WORKER, CONDITIONAL (LSX)

Description

The “Licensed Social Worker, Conditional” license is a non-clinical, entry level, license which requires an earned bachelor’s degree and education that is sufficiently related to social work or social welfare. A “conditional license” indicates the LSX licensee has entered an arrangement of consultation pursuant to Chapter 13 section 1.(1)(C) and may not practice social work without an active consultation agreement on record with the Board. If a consultation agreement ends, the LSX must notify the Board and submit a new consultation agreement form for approval. LSX licensees may not engage in private practice.

The consultant shall provide consultation pursuant to Chapter 13 Section 2.(1)(B)(2)  and provide a Verification of Consultation Form to the LSX licensee when either the consultation requirement has been completed, or the consultation agreement has ended. 

For LSX licensees to advance to the Licensed Social Worker (LS) license,  they must complete a total of 96 hours of consultation concurrent with 3200 hours of social work employment, while holding an active LSX, in a period of not less than 2 years nor more than 4 years. The LSX should take and pass the required examination for LS once they have completed their consultation and experience hours, prior to applying for LS licensure.

Application Information

 Applicants for LSX licensure are required to submit:

  • A completed Online Application for Licensure; 

  • A completed "Agreement to Provide Consultation" form, signed by a qualified consultant; 

  • An official transcript of an earned bachelor's degree sufficiently related to social work;  

  • For applicants whose degrees do not appear on the following list, a completed Educational Worksheet.

LSX Renewal and Continuing Education Information

Renew a License

Terms:

  • Renews every 2 years on the month of initial issuance.

  • May not practice social work without an active consultation agreement on record with the Board. 

  • May be renewed one time only.

  • Must pass ASWB Bachelor exam and apply for LS prior to final expiration (not less than 2 years nor more than 4 years).

  • Renewal applications may be submitted approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date.

Requirements:

  • Continuing Education: 25 hours of continuing education pursuant to the Board Rules Chapter 14 (DOCX).

  • At least 6 of the 25 contact hours must be earned in social work ethics.

  • At least 6 of the 25 contact hours must be earned in psychosocial assessment.

  • 12 contact hours in family or intimate partner violence pursuant to Title 32,§7060. (This is a one-time requirement).



 

LICENSED SOCIAL WORKER (LS)

Description

The “Licensed Social Worker” license is a non-clinical, bachelor level, license which requires an earned bachelor’s degree in social work or social welfare OR completion of the consultation requirements while licensed conditionally (LSX);  and a passing score on the ASWB Bachelor examination. LS licensees may not engage in private practice.

An applicant for LS licensure must enter an arrangement of consultation pursuant to Chapter 13 section 2.(1)(3) and must have a consultation agreement on record with the Board for the first 2 to 4 years of licensure. If a consultation agreement ends, the LS must notify the Board and submit a new consultation agreement form for approval, until the consultation requirement has been completed.

LS licensees may provide consultation to LSX or other LS licensees provided they meet the requirements pursuant to Chapter 13 section 1.(1)(C) or Chapter 13 section 2.(1)(3)(A)(2) respectively.

 Applicants for LS licensure are required to submit:

For applicants with a Bachelor of Social Work Degree:

 

For applicants with an active Social Worker - Conditional (LSX) License: 

  • A completed Online Application for Licensure; 

  • Documentation of successful passage of the required ASWB examination (Bachelors); 

  • An official transcript of an earned bachelor's degree sufficiently related to social work; 

  • A completed Verification of Consultation form, or forms, documenting completion of 96 hours of consultation concurrent with 3200 hours of social work employment from your previously approved consultant(s);

  • A completed "Agreement to Provide Consultation" form, signed by a qualified consultant.
     

LS Renewal and Continuing Education Information

Renew a License

Terms:

  • Renews every 2 years on the month of initial issuance.

  • LS licensees shall report the number of hours worked and number of consultation hours received at each license renewal until the LS Consultation requirement is completed. If the licensee fails to complete 3,200 hours of social work employment and 96 hours of consultation in a period of 4 years, the license is subject to revocation and will not be further renewed. Consultation and experience hours must be submitted on the Verification of Consultation form.

  • Renewal applications may be submitted approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date.

Requirements:

  • Continuing Education: 25 hours of continuing education pursuant to the Board Rules Chapter 14 (DOCX).

  • At least 4 of the 25 contact hours must be earned in social work ethics.

  • 12 contact hours in family or intimate partner violence pursuant to Title 32,§7060. (This is a one-time requirement).



 

LICENSED MASTER SOCIAL WORKER (LM)

Description

The “Licensed Master Social Worker” license is a non-clinical, master level, independent license which requires an earned master's or doctoral of social work degree and a passing score on the ASWB Masters examination. LM licensees may engage in private practice.

LM licensees may provide consultation to LSX and LS licensees provided they meet the requirements pursuant to Chapter 13 section 1.(1)(C) and Chapter 13 section 2.(1)(3) respectively.

  • Documentation of successful passage of the required ASWB Masters examination;

  • An official transcript of an earned Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE accredited program.
     

LM Renewal and Continuing Education Information

Renew a License

Terms:

  • Renews every 2 years on the month of initial issuance.

  • Renewal applications may be submitted approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date.

Requirements:

  • Continuing Education: 25 hours of continuing education pursuant to the Board Rules Chapter 14 (DOCX).

  • At least 4 of the 25 contact hours must be earned in social work ethics.

  • 12 contact hours in family or intimate partner violence pursuant to Title 32,§7060. (This is a one-time requirement).



 

LICENSED MASTER SOCIAL WORKER, CONDITIONAL CLINICAL (MC)

Description

The “Licensed Master Social Worker, Conditional Clinical” license is a clinical, master level, conditional license which requires an earned master's or doctoral of social work degree and a passing score on the ASWB Masters examination. MC may not engage in private practice.

A “conditional license” indicates the MC licensee has entered an arrangement of consultation pursuant to Chapter 13 section 4.(1)(C) and may not practice social work without an active consultation agreement on record with the Board. If a consultation agreement ends, the MC must notify the Board and submit a new consultation agreement form for approval.

The consultant shall provide consultation pursuant to Chapter 13 Section 5.(1)(D)  and provide a Verification of Consultation Form to the MC licensee when either the consultation requirement  for LC licensure has been completed, or the consultation agreement has ended. 

MC licensees may provide consultation to LSX and LS licensees provided they meet the requirements pursuant to Chapter 13 section 1.(1)(C) and section 2.(1)(3) respectively.

LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER (LC)

Description

The “Licensed Clinical Social Worker” license is a clinical, master level, independent license which requires an earned master's or doctoral of social work degree, a passing score on the ASWB Clinical examination, and evidence of successful completion of clinical social work consultation and experience pursuant to Chapter 13 section 5.(1)(D). LC may engage in private practice.

LC licensees may provide consultation to LSX, LS, and MC licensees provided they meet the requirements pursuant to Chapter 13 section 1.(1)(C), section 2.(1)(3), and section 5.(1)(D) respectively.

  • An official transcript of an earned Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE accredited program;

LICENSURE BY ENDORSEMENT

Description

Applicants who hold an active social worker license, in good standing, in another U.S. state or jurisdiction, may apply for the equivalent Maine social worker license through licensure by endorsement.

To qualify, applicants must be in good standing in all jurisdictions they currently hold or have held a professional license in.
