"I took part in the skills-based health education teaching a few years back put on by the state. It was a huge help to me as a teacher who has to juggle all the grade levels plus middle school health. I would recommend it to anyone who is teaching health education in Maine."
~ K - 8 PE & HE Teacher

The Maine DOE is pleased to have Sarah Benes, one of the co-authors of The Essentials of Teaching Health Education - Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment* as well as supporting resources, back in Maine to offer this virtual, interactive workshop. The workshop will focus on the foundations of a skills-based approach to health education (SBHE), shifting the emphasis of the curriculum, instruction, and assessment from primarily knowledge acquisition (learning a lot of new information) to skill acquisition (learning how to do something that will promote health and well-being of self and others). The session will engage participants in 1) learning information and skills needed for a skills-based approach; 2) curricula planning and development; and 3) strategies for effective instruction, and meaningful assessments. Even if you’re familiar with SBHE, you’ll take away new learning from this ever evolving workshop!

This workshop is a pre-requisite for the Advanced Skills-Based Health Education workshops to be offered in the fall of 2024.

Fall 2024

Inclusive Teaching Practices and Learning Training… Moving the Needle

September 25 & 26 in Augusta
Registration Link (Opening soon!)

What May 2023 participants said about the training…
“One of the best, most useful trainings I have ever attended.” and “The Inclusive Teaching Practices Training was a training that every educator should experience. I left the training feeling overwhelmed, nervous but also excited, empowered and hopeful."

he Maine DOE Health Education & Physical Education Program will host this highly engaging event focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) and the impact on teaching practices. The training will include an exploration of foundational concepts in DEIJ and what it looks like in curriculum, instructional strategies, and classroom management practices. Following the training, participants are invited to join a virtual DEIJ Community of Practice for conversations and technical assistance. Anyone working with youth, not just HE & PE educators, is more than welcome to attend!

We are excited to have Dr. Sarah Benes as our consultant on this initiative. She is an assistant professor at Southern Connecticut State University in health education and physical education and President of SHAPE America. We are pleased to have Maine HE & PE Teacher Leaders as co-trainers!
