How do I know what activities are subject to shoreland zoning?
To determine if an activity is subject to shoreland zoning, it is best to start with your local Code Enforcement Officer or Planning Staff. They can help you figure out if your property is within the shoreland zone, and if so which district it is in. Getting a copy of your municipal shoreland zoning or land use ordinance is also important. Every municipality has an ordinance that addresses activities in the shoreland zone. The ordinance usually has a land use table that shows which activities require permits and who the proper permitting authority is. Even if activities in the land use table are allowed without permitting, there are standards in the ordinance that those activities have to meet.
