Pittsfield Bridge Project Updates
April 2024
Throughout April, crews worked on deck forms and overhangs. Rebar was placed, bent and tied. Crews placed the bidwell successfully. Common excavation occurred at abutment 2.
March 2024
The department has made progress on the I-95 northbound bridge over Madawaska Ave. Crews are actively placing forms and overhangs for the bridge deck, with concurrent efforts to remove concrete from abutment 1 backwall. Concrete placement for the abutment 1 backwall proceeded following the preparation of forms and rebar placement. Simultaneously, work is underway to remove the existing abutment 2 backwall. Despite challenges posed by storms, cleanup operations have been carried out.
February 2024
Crews working on the I-95 North Bound bridge over Madawaska Ave placed bearings on Abutments and piers, as well as structural steel for phase 2.
January 2024
Work on the Madawaska Ave bridge over I-95 NB saw workers remove the structural steel from the bridge, along with existing pedestals on abutments and piers. Contractor curing abutment pedestals and forming and placed pier pedestals.
November 2023
Workers completed installing rebar and forms for the passing lane side of the deck and placed concrete. Continued clearing and grubbing of north crossover area in median and removed concrete from the abutment 2 backwall. Placed concrete for the Abutment 2 backwall and deck portion of the joint.
October 2023
Northeast Paving installed forms for the deck and bunks, along with brackets for the overhangs. Forms and rebar for the abutment one backwall were installed and concrete placed.
September 2023
Workers installed seals in the joints of the I-95 southbound bridge over Madawaska Avenue. Pavement at the end of abutment one was saw cut. Traffic control devices were installed for the I-95 northbound bridge over Madawaska Ave. Rumble strips were removed and temporary pavement placed. Workers saw cut the bridge deck. The passing lane side of the deck was removed. Began removal of concrete at abutment 2.
August 2023
Construction on northbound bridge over Madawaska Ave and crossovers is set to begin in September.
July 2023
Performed repairs on the pier of the I-95 northbound bridge over North Main Street/Madawaska Road.
June 2023
Placed base and intermediate HMA pavement for the rest of the travel lane. Continued removing the overhang brackets from the bridge. Installed the bridge rail transitions and guardrail for the travel lane side. Contractor switched traffic over to grind out passing lane side. Excavated to approach slab and placed Aggregate Subbase Course Gravel. Continued grubbing of south crossover and installed culvert for crossover. Performing common excavation, placing of gravel and installed a culvert pipe on the south crossover. Placing protective shielding on the northbound bridge over North Main Street/ Madawaska Road. Placed gravel, installed a riprap downspout, and paved the approaches on the passing lane side of the southbound bridge over North Main Street/ Madawaska Road. Installed HMA surface pavement, painted lines and opened the southbound bridge over Madawaska Avenue to both lanes of traffic. Shut down one lane on northbound to work on the south crossover and for placing signposts. Continued pier repair work on the northbound bridge over Madawaska Avenue.
May 2023
Placed concrete for deck, expansion joint and curbs. Excavated for south trailing end of bridge on the travel way and placed ASC Gravel back in on I-95 Southbound Bridge over North Main Street/Madawaska Road. Installed bridge rail and snow fence on travel lane side. Installed high performance membrane. Fine graded and placed HMA for leading end of travel way. Removed forms and shielding from the southbound bridge and began installing them on the northbound bridge.
April 2023
Work continued through April on the I-95 Southbound Bridge over North Main Street/Madawaska Road Project, currently in Phase 2 of construction. The contractor installed bunks and formwork for the bridge deck as well as forms and rebar for Abutment 1. Forms were installed along with rebar for Abutment 2 and the deck. Crews worked Setting up Bidwell for deck placement, removed overhang brackets on passing lane side, and repaired concrete at Abutment 2 and at the pier.
March 2023
The contractor placed a temporary concrete wearing surface on Phase 1 and is removing shielding, bunks, and forms, from the underside of the bridge. Phase 1 is complete, except that the permanent wearing surface and approach pavement will need to be completed at a later date. Temporary concrete barrier has been relocated and traffic shifted so that Phase 2 can begin. Removed and replaced broken crash barrels. Removed existing bridge rail and cut bridge deck up for removal for Phase 2.
