Head of Youth Services

  • Library: Falmouth Memorial Library
  • Town: Falmouth
  • Library Type: Public
  • Position Type: MLS Preferred
  • Deadline: July 31, 2024

Description, How to Apply, and Contact:

Falmouth Memorial Library is seeking to fill a leadership role for our lively, sun-filled, cheerful, and recently renovated Youth Services Department. The Head of Youth Services, under the general direction of the Director, will work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to set the vision for the Youth Services Department and ensure that Youth Services has the means to follow that vision.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills, as a great part of this job will involve interacting with the local community. This position also exercises general supervision over Youth Services Department staff.

The library was recently renovated in 2020 and features a dedicated service desk in our busy children's room, a fully enclosed children's program area with age appropriate interactive toys, and acoustical panels for noise dimming, as well as a separate room devoted to teen use, which includes a study room exclusively for teens.

We are looking for a creative and friendly staff member who likes interacting with babies, toddlers, children, tweens, teens and their caregivers, while fostering a safe and welcoming space for the community. We need someone able to provide reader's advisory, especially late elementary-school to middle ages, and someone with experience planning and implementing story-times and engaging children's and teen programming. The ideal candidate will organize and keep the space looking cheerful and neat, and is not afraid to jump in and collaborate on family programs with other professional staff.

This position is full-time (40 hours per week), pay ranging from $28.00 - $32.00/hour based on skills and experience. Full time benefits include a daily 1-hour paid lunch break, 15 paid holidays, 12 sick days, 2-week vacation (increases to 3 weeks after one year of employment), 100% employer paid health insurance premiums for individuals, and retirement benefits via MEPERS, as well as offering a 401(k) with up to a 4% employer match on employee contributions.

Computer literacy, including working knowledge of PC operating systems, e-readers, tablets, etc. is required. The position requires moving around the library, which includes bending and stretching to shelve items, and lifting materials (up to 25 lbs.). The majority of a shift will be spent working at a service desk and interacting with patrons and staff. Master's Degree from an ALA accredited program is required; as well as three to five years of public library experience in Children's Services. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Please submit a cover letter and resume via email or mail only (no phone calls please), to Jenna Mayotte, Director, at: jmayotte@falmouthmemoriallibrary.org

Application deadline is July 31, 2024, resumes may be reviewed prior to deadline.
