Doak letter

This letter, written by Charles H. Doak during his time fighting for the 6th Maine in the Civil War, details his experiences during the holiday season of 1861. Addressed to his “distant friend,” Mary Gates, of Carroll, ME, Charles wrote this letter from Camp Griffin in the week following Christmas, detailing his experiences of Christmas meals and putting up trees. Doak, a native of Bucksport, enlisted in Company E of the 6th Maine Infantry earlier that year at the age of 19. He was honorably discharged in 1864 and mustered out in Portland.
