This page is dedicated to supporting local governments and school districts that are participating in the FY22 SLCGP and receiving multi-factor authentication (MFA) keys from Yubico.
Here, you will find a variety of resources to assist you through the MFA implementation process including workshop session recordings, implementation guides, FAQs, and other resources.
For local governments that missed the window to participate in Program Year 1 (FY2022), we encourage you to stay tuned for announcements regarding Program Year 2 (FY2023). Keep an eye out for updates and opportunities to participate in the next phase of the program.
Why Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?
Leveraging grant funds from SLCGP Program Year 1 (FY2022), the State of Maine has partnered with Yubico, a cybersecurity company best known for creating the YubiKey. The YubiKey is a hardware authentication device that provides strong, phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA) for secure access to computers, networks, and online services.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security process that requires users to provide two or more verification factors to access a resource, such as a password (something you know), a smartphone or security token (something you have), or biometrics like fingerprints (something you are). For local governments, MFA is crucial because it enhances security by adding an extra layer of protection, even if a password is compromised. It also protects against phishing attacks, ensures compliance with regulations, and helps maintain public trust by safeguarding citizens' data. Implementing MFA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access and data breaches, ensuring sensitive information remains secure.
