Software/Internet Tutor

Time Commitment

1-3 hours, weekly, 3 month commitment

Purpose

To provide one-on-one instructions with the patrons in basic use of the Internet, the library's online catalog system, online databases, and Microsoft Office and/or Open Office. This volunteer teaches basic computer skills to adult learners, including how to navigate the Web and use a Web-based email account.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Instructs patrons in the basic use of the Internet
  • Instructs patrons in the basic use of the library catalog
  • Instructs patrons in the basic use of MARVEL! Maine?s online electronic resource
  • Instructs patrons in the basic use of Microsoft Office and/or Open Office.
  • Instructs patrons in setting up and using a Web-based email account.

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications Required

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work congenially with staff, patrons and other volunteers
  • Ability to instruct clearly in basic computer use, using the simplest, non-technical language
  • Ability to exercise patience and understanding in working with both beginners and intermediate computer users
  • Familiarity with Internet searching
  • Familiarity with either Microsoft Office and/or Open Office
  • Familiarity with the library's online catalog
  • Ability to learn to navigate through the MARVEL! databases
  • Familiarity with Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo mail
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, policies and procedures
