FTP Access & Accounts

What is FTP?

FTP (file transfer protocol) is the method used for moving files from your local computer to the state's public web server, and vice versa ("uploading" and "downloading" files). In order for the public to be able to view your web pages, they must be on the web server. You can FTP through Dreamweaver or you can use a separate FTP utility such as WS_FTP or FileZilla.

What is an FTP account?

For security reasons, each person transferring files via FTP must have their own username and password in order to connect to the state server using Dreamweaver or another FTP program. InforME will set up an FTP account for you and provide you with a unique username and password. Please keep this account information in a safe place and do not share it with anyone. Each user should have their own individual FTP account.

Who is eligible for an FTP account?

  • State employees who are authorized by their department or agency to manage, update, or administer a website on the state server using Dreamweaver or an FTP utility program. Note: they must be listed in the Webmaster Directory in order to receive an FTP account.
  • Individuals (non-state employees) who are contracted with a state agency to develop or maintain a website on the state server. This requires specific authorization from the agency via a letter on agency letterhead signed by the agency head.

An FTP account provides access to an existing website directory on the state server.
