Anchor Links

To make long pages more user friendly, we recommend using anchor links.

Example on MEMA's site:

The two elements you need to make anchor links work are: Anchor and link.

Take the following steps to create anchor links:

  1. Place your cursor at the spot on the page where you want to jump to when you click the anchor link
  2. Click the flag button:
  3. In the pop up add the name of your anchor (e.g. section1 or any other word that makes sense for this section. Do not add blank spaces!)
  4. Click "Ok" → You will see a red flag in the spot where your cursor was:
  5. Next, highlight the text that should be the anchor link that takes you to the anchor/flag that you just set
  6. Click the link button and type a # and the word you used for the anchor, e.g. #section1:
  7. Click "Save"

When you save and view your page, clicking the link you just created should take you to the section where you placed the anchor/flag.

Jump to anchor on different page

It is also possible to create an anchor link that jumps to a section of a different page. Setting up this type of anchor link is similar to the "on page" anchor link. The only difference is that you have to add the URL of the page before the #section1. E.g. https://www.maine.gov/mema/test#section1

Example: Click link on page A to jump to specific section on page B:

You need to:

  • Set the anchor/flag at the desired location on page B
  • Create the anchor link on page A that will jump to the section on page B
