Title Requirements
Maine requires a title for vehicles with a model year within the last 25 years:
• As of January 1, 2024, vehicles with a model year of 1999 or newer must have a title.
• As of January 1, 2025, vehicles with a model year of 2000 or newer must have a title.
Maine requires a title for these types of vehicles:
• All motor vehicles except special mobile equipment
• Motorcycles with engines 300 CC or more
• Trailers with an unladen weight of 3,001 lbs. or more
Electronic Lien Titling Program (ELT)
The BMV is in the process of launching the ELT Program. This will eliminate the need for paper titles by allowing lenders to receive lien and title information electronically. Learn more about the ELT Program here!
