Statistics

The numbers below represent real people — family, friends and neighbors.

In the United States in 2024:

  • More than 103,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant.
  • On average, 17 people die each day waiting for a transplant.
  • Every 8 minutes a new name is added to the national waiting list.

In New England, the October 2024 waitlist (which includes Mainers listed at out-of-state hospitals) has:

  • 5,960 people awaiting a lifesaving organ;
  • 5,081 people awaiting a kidney;
  • 615 people awaiting a liver;
  • 28 people awaiting a pancreas;
  • 39 people awaiting a kidney and pancreas;
  • 166 people awaiting a heart;
  • 27 people awaiting a lung;
  • 2 people awaiting an intestine.

It is the goal of the Department of the Secretary of State, along with its organ donation partners, to decrease the number of people waiting for a transplant.

You can help by adding your name to the Maine Organ Donor Registry.
