The numbers below represent real people — family, friends and neighbors.
In the United States in 2024:
- More than 103,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant.
- On average, 17 people die each day waiting for a transplant.
- Every 8 minutes a new name is added to the national waiting list.
In New England, the October 2024 waitlist (which includes Mainers listed at out-of-state hospitals) has:
- 5,960 people awaiting a lifesaving organ;
- 5,081 people awaiting a kidney;
- 615 people awaiting a liver;
- 28 people awaiting a pancreas;
- 39 people awaiting a kidney and pancreas;
- 166 people awaiting a heart;
- 27 people awaiting a lung;
- 2 people awaiting an intestine.
It is the goal of the Department of the Secretary of State, along with its organ donation partners, to decrease the number of people waiting for a transplant.
